Breakups & Quickie Engagements

Breakups & Quickie Engagements

What’s going on with our twenty-something celebs? I love a good love story but Pariana’s (Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson) and Jailey’s (Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber) rushed [engagement] rings feel a tad unhealthy. Does someone have a secret terminal illness? Is there an unplanned pregnancy? I’m not even sure those are good reasons to tie the knot but I’m trying to make sense of things. What’s the hurry?

I’m concerned that couples choosing marriage while still in the infatuation stage of a relationship are setting themselves up for failure and setting a poor example for their young fans that play them so closely. It’s quite easy to look blissfully and perfectly in love when you’re surrounded by paparazzi documenting every fresh hand-hold and kiss as you frolick around NYC with infallible winged eyeliner and an immaculately slick sky-high ponytail that your invisible glam squad hooks you up with day in and day out. But I wonder, has this newborn pairing even had their first fight yet? Obviously Justin and Hailey have already had their moments of not seeing eye to eye...in the past they’ve split and gotten back together, which I think is a tell-tale sign of a shaky foundation.

LEFT IN THE DUST

I feel for the exes. Pete dated Cazzie David for three years without mention of marriage and they only just broke up in May, while Ariana ended things with rapper Mac Miller that same month. Then there’s Justin who was canoodling with Selena Gomez just a few months back. I can’t help but wonder how Cazzie, Selena, and Mac are feeling while the media buzzes with daily stories of their exes being sprung over new pussy and new penis. To hell with mourning past lovers I guess. I hope the ex-girls and ex-guy are as cool, calm, and unbothered as they appear to be on social media.

IN THEIR DEFENSE

Ariana has been the most vocal about defending hers and her friends’ marriage decision. In response to a skeptical fan she replied, via Twitter, “You do realize we are human beings who love and have lives, right?” She continued, “Love is lit. Shit happens. I hope to god it happens to you too. U deserve it,”

Weeks earlier, right after Pete popped the question and she said yes, she had this to say: "Forreal. The truth is I been the fuck thru it and life’s too short to be cryptic n shit about something as beautiful as this love I’m in. So Pete it is.” To be fair, I think AG has a level head on her shoulders, or at least knows when to walk away from a dire situation. She publicly said she left Mac Miller when the relationship became “toxic,” giving reason to believe she’d do the same if things ever got rocky with Pete.

TIME WILL TELL

I’m actually surprised there aren’t more shotgun engagements amongst the rich and famous, given that they have the money and freedom to be impulsive all the time. Whatever the outcome of these overzelous couplets is, I’m very interested. They’re not just entertaining to watch; I think there are valuable lessons we can learn from the triumphs and missteps of our famous brothers and sisters.

The future Mrs. Davidson is right. Love is lit. And we all deserve it.
